SIBO Treatment

Living with SIBO can feel uncomfortable, unpredictable, and exhausting. It can affect your daily routine, energy, confidence around eating, and overall quality of life. Common SIBO symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and food intolerance can make it difficult to get through the day comfortably and may leave you feeling frustrated, depleted, or unsure of what foods your body can tolerate.

SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It occurs when too many bacteria, or the wrong balance of bacteria, build up in the small intestine and interfere with normal digestion. This imbalance can lead to symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and, in some cases, weight loss, nutrient deficiencies, or malabsorption.

At Terrain Health, we help patients who are struggling with SIBO and the symptoms that come with it. Our approach starts with understanding what may be causing the overgrowth, why it keeps coming back, and which treatment options make the most sense for each patient. Antibiotics may be part of short-term SIBO treatment, but lasting improvement often requires looking deeper at the factors that may be driving the imbalance in the first place.

SIBO Symptoms and Patterns We Treat

SIBO can vary from one patient to another, but there are certain common patterns that we have come across in our treatment of SIBO.

Some of the common symptoms that are treated include:

  • increased bloating as the day progresses
  • excess gas or abdominal pain
  • diarrhea, constipation, or alternating symptoms
  • excessive feeling of fullness after consuming small amounts of food
  • digestion-related symptoms that are seemingly erratic
  • fatigue or brain fog that is related to digestion
  • signs of nutrient deficiency or malabsorption
  • recurrence of symptoms despite temporary relief

Bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are examples of symptoms frequently linked with SIBO. For those who have developed advanced stages of SIBO, symptoms indicating malabsorption or impaired digestion might also be evident.

How SIBO Type Can Influence Symptoms and Treatment

Not every case of SIBO looks the same. Breath testing may show different gas patterns, and those patterns can sometimes line up with different symptom profiles. They can also affect how treatment is approached.

Hydrogen-Dominant SIBO

In hydrogen-dominant SIBO, there is a higher prevalence of bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea as the main symptoms. If such a trend emerges, treatment is likely to involve the management of bacterial growth, digestion relaxation, and pinpointing the causes of recurrence.

Methane-Dominant SIBO

Methane is more commonly linked with constipation and slower gut motility. In many cases, this pattern is technically considered intestinal methanogen overgrowth rather than classic SIBO, but patients often group it into the same conversation because the symptoms can overlap. Treatment may need to account not only for the overgrowth itself, but also for the slower movement of the gut that can keep symptoms going.

Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO

Hydrogen sulfide associated with the condition can be difficult to diagnose, but it is frequently mentioned when the person has such manifestations as bloating, abdominal pain, urgency, or diarrhea symptoms in addition to the typical patterns identified during the breath test.

The main takeaway is that gas patterns can matter, but they are still only one part of the picture. Symptoms, motility, gut history, diet, and the reasons the overgrowth developed in the first place all help shape what treatment should look like.

Understanding SIBO and the Path to Better Gut Stability

SIBO often means something has disrupted the normal movement or function of the small intestine. That is part of why symptoms can keep coming back. If the overgrowth is being driven by an underlying issue, treating the bacteria alone may not be enough.

If your symptoms keep returning, there may be several underlying issues contributing to the problem, including:

  • Motility problems, where food and bacteria are not moving through the small intestine as they should
  • Structural issues or prior surgery that change the normal flow through the gut
  • Microbiome imbalance and excess bacterial fermentation
  • Deficiencies of nutrients that may impact energy and healing
  • Dysregulated eating behaviors that exacerbate symptoms but don’t cause them
  • Stress and nervous system overload

The goal with SIBO treatment is not just to reduce bacterial overgrowth, but also to understand why it developed and what may be keeping symptoms active. Antibiotics may be part of treatment, but the bigger goal is to improve symptoms and address the underlying causes whenever possible.

Get Customized, Root-Cause Support for SIBO

When dealing with SIBO, there shouldn’t be guesswork. Our evaluation process starts with gaining insights into what might be going on inside your gut, why there is bacterial overgrowth, and what you might need at this stage.

Our assessment may include:

  • patterns of symptoms such as bloating, digestive issues, food sensitivities, and abdominal pain
  • review of breath test results or other gastrointestinal testing when available
  • a detailed health history that includes past procedures, infections, motility issues, medications, and lifestyle factors
  • food habits and tolerance, without immediately moving into strict long-term restriction

SIBO treatment often overlaps with gastroenterology care, especially when someone has ongoing digestive symptoms or motility-related concerns. Our job is to see the big picture and to assist you in taking the next steps towards better nutrition and overall improvement.

SIBO Treatment Options for Functional Health: the Path to Better Balance

No two SIBO treatment plans should look the same. Your care plan might include:

  • food approaches that will help relieve symptoms without making me constantly stressed by my meals
  • information about various treatment modalities, including the use of antibiotics, where necessary, but also information as to why symptoms might be coming back
  • nutrient supplementation in case of deficiency of iron, B12, and any other deficiencies
  • motility and digestive support depending on my symptoms and medical history
  • stress management, sleep and lifestyle support that will help relieve the stress from my body every day
  • repeated symptoms monitoring and adjusting treatment according to symptoms because SIBO treatment should not be based solely on a particular day’s symptoms

Antibiotic use is sometimes short-term therapy for SIBO, but does not address all aspects of the issue. This is why taking a look at the underlying patterns of your symptoms can prove helpful.

Whole-Person Care, Beyond the Bloating

You are more than a set of digestive symptoms or a breath test result. You’re a whole person who wants to enjoy their food without any worries, think clearly during the day, and not be bothered by constant digestive problems.

Many people come to us feeling frustrated because they have tried different things without ever feeling like they had a clear plan. Visits to the doctor may be about bloating, changing diets, or other temporary solutions that don’t address the underlying causes for symptoms recurring.

This is what makes our SIBO treatment approach unique. We take the time to understand the full picture so we can focus on building more stability instead of just reacting to symptoms.

Take the First Step Toward More Stable SIBO Support

The goal of treating SIBO should be more than helping you get through the next meal. You should get insight into your symptoms, how they work, and create support for why these may really be happening in the first place.

Whether you are just starting to look into possible SIBO, coming off treatment, or feeling frustrated by symptoms that keep returning, reach out today; we can help you move forward with more clarity and a more thoughtful plan.
